Glucosamine and joint pain
A lot of people with mild to moderate osteoarthritis are currently using glucosamine supplements on a daily basis, since they experience a substantial reduction of joint pain while using the supplement. The link between glucosamine and joint pain is still not fully researched, and different studies have come to very different results. What we do know is that many patients feel so good when using glucosamine that they refrain from using traditional joint pain medication, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). There is also a group of patients where the best solution is a combination of glucosamine supplements and traditional joint pain medication. It should also be noted that a significant group of osteoarthritis patients feels no effect of glucosamine supplements at all, or experience only very mild beneficial effects that are not as potent as the effects of NSAIDs. Even if you feel a significant alleviation of joint pain when using glucosamine supplements, it is not a good idea to stop taking your normal osteoarthritis medication without first consulting your doctor.
Glucosamine and joint pain controversy
As mentioned earlier, studies of glucosamin and joint pain have reached very different results and come to quite conflicting conclusions. Even within the same study, different subgroups can show very different reactions to glucosamin. It is therefore hard for anyone to know if how glucosamine and joint pain is connected, and it is difficult for doctors to know for sure whether they should recommend their patients to try glucosamin supplements or not. If you ask three different doctors about glucosamine and joint pain, chances are high that you will get three very different answers. This is true not only for glucosamin and joint pain benefits; it is true for possible glucosamin side effects too. It is always a good idea to obtain information from several different sources when researching glucosamine and joint pain.
